Why Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the place Al is most often asked about: why Sri Lanka? The answer is simple—he fell completely in love with the island and its people from the very first visit, after being introduced to it by a friend. One moment in particular has stayed with him ever since: a young woman cycling past him late at night, leaning her head back with a huge smile—one of those unmistakably warm Sri Lankan smiles—and calling out, “Merry Christmas!” It was such a spontaneous, joyful moment that it captured the spirit of the island and stayed in his heart.

Although Sri Lanka has faced many challenges over the years—tsunamis, civil unrest, terrorist attacks, cyclones, and economic hardship—the resilience of its people continues to shine through. Their strength, kindness, and determination to carry on with a smile is something Al deeply admires.

He is especially drawn to the traditional village way of life, where people greet each other warmly, smile easily, and make strangers feel welcome. That natural friendliness feels refreshing and genuine, especially compared to the more reserved culture often found in the UK, where a simple hello can sometimes be met with suspicion.

Then, of course, there is the island itself: beautiful weather, incredible tropical fruit, rich wildlife, breathtaking scenery, cool misty hills, and gloriously hot beaches. Sri Lanka truly offers something for everyone.

But above all, it is the people who make the island unforgettable. Their warmth and hospitality are what keep calling Al back.

Al finds that the high humidity where the villa is located greatly benefits his health. The moisture in the air helps keep his skin from drying out, making the need for moisturisers almost nonexistent. Combined with the abundance of sunshine and natural Vitamin D, the climate has proved especially beneficial for his overall wellbeing.

The continuous warmth—even during the rainier periods—has also suited him well, providing a comfort that colder climates often cannot. In addition, the easy access to fresh tropical fruit, often grown locally and with fewer to no chemicals, has brought clear benefits to his general health.

For Al, the environment is more than just pleasant—it actively contributes to a healthier and more comfortable way of life. He rarely suffers from common illnesses such as colds, aches, and general minor complaints while staying there.

He has also noticed something quite remarkable with his young grandson, who has a serious condition called silent aspiration ( fluid food on lungs) and often experiences skin reactions in the UK. When staying at the villa, those symptoms can improve dramatically—sometimes clearing within hours rather than taking days.

For Al, this has been one of the most striking benefits of the environment. Whether it is the warm climate, the humidity, the cleaner air, or simply the relaxed pace of life, he has seen firsthand how positively it can affect health and wellbeing.

So when he asked why Sri Lanka, these are a few reasons why he loves “tear drop” island of Sri Lanka
